The Bizhan Sharopov Memorial Endowment Fund for Scholarships in Biology Studies

Make a meaningful impact – Support a Hero’s Legacy

Bizhan Sharopov laid down his life as a hero in April 2022 fighting the enemy in the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, 11th Separate Rapid Response Battalion (Special Purpose Unit).  For months, he was reported missing and his family and friends hoped and prayed that he still lived.  His death was confirmed in February 2023.  Bizhan held Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in the field of Biology.

His friends Dariya Paramonova and Roman Nabozhniak, who served with Bizhan in the war, established an endowment scholarship fund in his memory for PhD students studying in the field of Biology at KMA, to provide them with the opportunity to participate in research internships at leading laboratories and universities worldwide.

The first competition will be held for the upcoming academic year for a three-month internship at ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.  Funds are needed to cover €15,000 for travel, accommodation, daily expenses, administrative costs, and other fees.  The cost of the internship is covered by the ETH Zurich.  Seed money has been collected by his friends in the amount of approximately $5000 USD.  But the endowment needs to be built up in perpetuity so that deserving scientists can continue their research at an international level.  Donor funding can catalyze major discoveries and health innovations in the future.

Bizhan Sharopov was Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists at the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, a researcher at the Department of Neuro-Muscular Physiology at the O.O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology, co-founder and chief biologist of the company ‘Ukrainian Genetic Technologies’.  He actively participated in the Revolution of Dignity and served in the ‘Aidar’ Battalion from 2014 to 2015, and then he defended his PhD and became a member of the KMA Faculty.

Let us ensure that Bizhan’s legacy lives on following this tragic heroic loss, and that scholarships will provide financial assistance to deserving PhD students at KMA in future years.

WE INVITE ALL CARING INDIVIDUALS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FUNDRAISING FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP
